Bactiguard’s technology is well-proven, effective and tissue friendly. It is based on a thin layer of noble metals, referred to as the “Bactiguard coating,’ which is applied to the surface of medical devices and which prevents bacteria from adhering and forming biofilm (growth of microbes). This contributes to significantly reducing the number of healthcare associated infections. The technology can be applied to almost all types of materials which are used for medical devices.

SAFE AND PATIENT FRIENDLY TECHNOLOGY

The technology is based on a hundred-year-old patented Swedish innovation by Gustav Dahlén. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1912 and is the man behind the successful AGA lighthouse system. Dahlén resolved the critical task of applying thin layers of metals on glass during the development process of the lighthouses. Thereafter the technology was developed further, first by Dahlén’s pupil Axel Bergström and later by his protege Billy Södervall, who is the innovator behind the Bactiguard technology.

The technology consists of a thin layer of noble metals; gold, palladium and silver which are applied to the surface of medical devices. The composition of metals creates a galvanic effect, referred to as a ‘micro current’ which prevents bacteria adhesion and biofilm formation. The surface is firmly attached to the surface of the products, which means that the effect remains for a very long time. There is no increased risk for thrombosis and the coating does not trigger immune reactions . The amount of noble metals is very low and is not released in any toxic or pharmacological quantities, which makes the technology both tissue-friendly and safe for patients. 

MECHanism OF ACTION  

Bactiguard’s infection protection coating very effectively prevents bacterial adhesion and the formation of biofilm on the surface of medical devices. The three noble metals gold, palladium and silver create a galvanic effect when the coating comes into contact with fluids. This makes it more difficult for bacteria to attach and form biofilm on the surface.

HANDLED AS UNCOATED PRODUCTS

Bactiguard’s noble metal coating is very thin and therefore difficult to detect with the naked eye. It does not affect other properties of products which are treated with the coating and retain the same thickness, appearance and stiffness.

The coating doesn´t require the implementation of special procedures before usage, which is often the case with other products with infection prevention properties. The waste management of Bactiguard coated products is the same as for uncoated products.
